Seaside Fun for National Marine Week

This week is National Marine Week. From July 25th to August 9th, the North West Wildlife Trusts are holding events around the region's coastline, giving you the chance to explore the seashore, discover dunes and wallow with whelks.
This year’s theme is dolphins and the Trusts are calling on people to look out for them and record their sightings after a pod of more than 100 dolphins was spotted in the Irish Sea. Throughout the campaign you can share your sightings and photos on Twitter by tagging @LivingSeasNW

On August 9th two events will take place on the Wirral:

Seaside Fun Day
Thurstaston Beach
11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Join us for a day of seashore fun for all the family, including giant beach art, crafts with Shore Cottage Studio and the chance to meet Blue Planet's Charlie the clown fish. Plus, learn all about our amazing coastal wildlife.

Walk to Hilbre
9.45am prompt arrival for 10am start.
Take in the two miles across the sands to Hilbre Island where hundreds of seals are hauled out on to the sand banks of the River Dee Estuary and can be seen clearly with a telescope. Many more swim around to the end of the island where you may get a close look. The day will include a seaside scavenger hunt, rock pool dipping, bird and seal watching. Not suitable for children under five.

You can find out more about National Marine Week and the activities planned on the Wirral and the north west of England via the Cheshire Wildlife Trust website:

In Praise of Pollinators

New Ferry Butterfly Park was thrilled to be nominated for Defra's Pollinator Champion of Champions Award.

The award recognises excellent practice in land management to support pollinators. Schools, farms, local authorities, community groups and the construction industry were represented. The event took place on July 17th as part of Pollinator Awareness Week, designed to raise awareness of pollinator needs and highlight what everyone can do to support pollinators.

We did not win first prize but were given a winner’s certificate and we are extremely pleased to see the importance of pollinators being highlighted.

Come along to New Ferry Butterfly Park on a Sunday afternoon between 12 noon and 4 p.m. and see for yourself what is happening on the reserve.

“Congratulations on being nominated for this award - there were 25 fantastic entries and the judging panel had a very difficult task indeed”.

Jen Taylor, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra)
